Today, I visited Phil Allen's home studio in the Upper West Side. We talked about about his incredible knowledge of Western painting; how Allen believes we as a young species are in our infancy in regards to what is possible in visual culture; and a memorable experience he had sitting in the lotus position next to Allen Ginsberg at a protest near the UN; and then there are the paintings.

Allen is at a place in his career where the chops are on full display. The ease with which he can meld abstraction and figuration, while bringing his love of DeKooning, Gorky, Stuart Davis, and others along on the ride, is a thing of beauty. His range, palette, ability to resist categorization, and capitalize on mood, were all singing in ways I have never seen before. I was on a joy ride today.

Thank you, Phil!
